Internationally acclaimed in the field of intellectual property strategy and with experience in all science and technology sectors, Kate can transform a project or business from the mundane to a significant, sustainably valuable asset.
Kate’s diverse career path has enabled her to provide internationally recognised expertise in the field of intellectual property (IP) strategy to New Zealand and overseas enterprises. Her international awards include among others being considered the "Expert of Experts" in IP Strategy.
More than a patent attorney, she has been instrumental in adding value to many iconic Kiwi organisations through the provision of services around the development, management and commercialisation of IP portfolios. Her advice goes beyond traditional IP matters and includes among others strategic planning, brainstorming, product development, succession planning and 3rd party relationships.
With degrees in physics and chemistry, along with significant experience in all technology sectors, Kate understands the fundamentals of science & technology behind most innovations.
On the business side, she built up her previous IP law firm James & Wells from virtual scratch to national significance. Leaving at the top of her game, when managing partner, she diversified into the hospitality industry to establish the Prof’s Group. The more visible enterprise is the restaurant Prof’s@Woodlands based at the historic Woodlands Estate in Gordonton.
On the governance side she has been, and is involved with, numerous boards and working groups on local and national levels.
An educator at heart and with many published articles, she has presented locally and internationally on all topics with a basis in intangible assets - including presenting on brainstorming techniques to an international forum of IP commercialisation groups in Vienna.
Currently Kate’s professional career is around providing high level strategic advice to New Zealand and international businesses.
