3 Reasons to SHHH!

Tip

Don’t tell the world - yet

Your great idea or new project is vulnerable. As tempting as it is to tell all, that can severely limit the potential of your project.

Keep everything confidential UNTIL you know the timing and steps of the protection and commercialisation of your project. This is often something covered in an IP strategy. If you have to talk to someone, then do so in confidence - preferably with a non-disclosure agreement. We can help with a suitable agreement if you do not have one.

There are three key reasons to keep quiet.

1) Commercial sensitivity - you do not want competitors to get the jump on you

2) Formal IP rights - many rights (such as patents) must be applied for BEFORE any non- confidential disclosure

3) Trade Secrets - sometimes the smartest way to keep your innovation away from competitors.

If you have already spilled the beans - there are some exceptions and creative remedies we can look at. However, best practice is to use the timing and content of any disclosure as a strategic decision.
